In fall of 2007, the township began construction of a non-motorized trail system along the Lower Rouge River in an effort to meet the residential demand for more outdoor recreation.
In spring 2010, hikers, bikers and joggers were treated to more miles of single-track hiking and mountain biking trails with the completed installation of five pedestrian bridges linking existing trails from Haggerty Road to Sheldon Road. The recent improvements increased the trail from two miles to over four miles in length.
The trail system is made possible by the efforts of Canton Municipal Services, Canton Leisure Services, Wayne County and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Canton residents interested in helping to support, maintain and champion the Lower Rouge River trail system should plan to attend the next meeting of the Friends of Canton Trails the Canton Administrative Building in Room "A" on the Lower Level. Regular meetings are held at 7pm on the second Thursday of each month.
