About the Jazz Artists

Phil Denny, an international smooth jazz Saxophonist, returns to Canton. Denny has the songwriting lyricism compared to veteran jazz performers, but an energetic fresh style for today’s jazz scene. The four-time Billboard charting, independent artist has been described as a passionate and soulful player often captivating audiences with his smooth, sexy yet energetic style. Friends and fans alike often describe him as a people’s musician having developed and maintained a very active, loyal and ever-growing fan base. Denny is all over social media when he’s not on a tropical cruise. Stop by and have your picture added to his Facebook wall, and enjoy some good jazz while you’re here.

John E Lawrence, a lifelong resident of Ypsilanti, is a jazz guitarist with a Motown sound. He is an accomplished musician recording several CD’s and writing various instructional guitar books. He loves to pay tribute to those musical guitarists that have influenced him the most. Among his many accomplishments is a performance at Carnegie Hall. In addition to touring throughout The United States, he has performed in Haiti, Surinam, Germany and The Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. John is very well supported by talented musicians and vocalists, all artists. Canton welcomes Lawrence, his troubadours, and his incredible guitar playing back to the stage!

Sheila Landis & Blues in the Night is a performance not to miss. As a 7-time “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” award winner, Sheila uses her voice to entice and enliven. Her voice is her instrument, moving through old tunes with grace and magnetism, and she performs the blues with emotion and her flair of “scat.” Sheila is supported by guitarist Rick Matle who brings his own version of rock, jazz, and blues influences into the mix. As regulars on the Mitch Album Show, we were lucky to pull them out of the studio to perform live in Canton. This will be a concert to send you home with a song in your head, wishing for more.

Ron Otis, a Detroit-based drummer renowned for his versatility, improvisation and impeccable timing makes his first appearance on the Canton stage. He incorporates syncopated rhythms and funky accenting. Most of all, he is one to watch while performing, a great entertainer. He has toured with guitarist Earl Klugh and pianist Bob James for over a decade and usually plays alongside bassist Al Turner. His first solo album Upfront puts the spotlight on Otis’ compositional and arrangement skills. It is called contemporary, modern jazz in its purest form and playfully melodic.

Rayse Biggs, an accomplished musician, composer and arranger is making his first appearance on the Canton stage. Biggs’ talent was discovered in his teens and he traveled with the popular Motown Review. He played trumpet for The Temptations, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and others. His skills as an exceptional trumpeter are continuously being recognized. Local and National commendations have come to Biggs for his many contributions to jazz.

Gerard Gibbs and RYZ take the Canton stage with their contemporary jazz sound. He knows his way around multiple instruments and can mesmerize even the most dedicated jazz musicians with his playful tactful approach to the keyboard. He entertains nationally on the concert circuit along with sax men Marion Meadows, Ronnie Laws and James Carter. Gibbs is also part of the contemporary jazz group Pieces of Dream. He plays keyboards in his group RYZ (pronounced RISE). The group’s recording “Livin’& Learnin” was their first as Gerard Gibbs & REORGAN’YZ (RYZ). Gibbs has a project dedicated to his son entitled, “Blues for Tyler” Gibbs seems to be all over the world and Canton is pleased to be able to catch him for one night this year, you do not want to miss it.

Greg Nagy, a multi-faceted artist is making his first appearance on the Canton stage. His songwriting, singing and guitar playing are infused with soul, R&B, rock and gospel. Recognized and awarded by many, Nagy now brings a personal blend of original blues, soul, and R&B you need to hear to understand. His release Stranded is an eclectic blend and continues to win Nagy international attention and acclaim. Stranded spent 14 weeks as Number One and seven consecutive months in The Top Ten on the Root Music Soul/R&B charts. Greg’s concert will be an exciting musical departure for Canton Jazz concert goers with vocal interpretations of soul and R&B lingering in your head long after you’re home. Nagy is not to be missed.
