She grew up in Detroit singing in youth choirs and studied at Wayne State and the Detroit Community School of Performing Arts. Her sultry and sophisticated sound has come from a background in Jazz, Gospel and Classical music. In 2004 she released her first CD entitled “Shine”. She continues to write and record original compositions, demonstrating her talents through song.
Jazz Keyboardist Nate Harasim is a welcomed addition to the Jazz Series. Harasim is both an accomplished musician and a producer. 2011 proved to be a pivotal year with the release of “Rush”, a powerful and energetic musical blend. Be sure to check out his electrifying show that delivers quite a “Rush”.
Growing up in Windsor, Ontario, flutist Alexander Zonjic is no stranger to the Detroit music scene. A childhood guitar player, Zonjic didn’t pick up a flute until the age of 21. Zonjic was a gifted student who saw mastering the instrument as a challenge and studied under the principal flutist in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His interest in Jazz resulted in an international tour in the 80’s and the recording of several genres of music including pop. Today, he often collaborates with other musicians and in 2009 released “Doin the D” with guests Kenny G and Chieli Minucci.
Making his first appearance in the Canton Color Jazz Series, Demetrius “Krayon” Nabors is a jazz keyboardist who appreciates music and any form of artistic expression. “A Journey Within Part I” is his debut album with compositions derived from gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues. The album is rooted in contemporary jazz and reflects his life experiences.
John E. Lawrence is a jazz guitarist that calls Ypsilanti, MI his home. John credits God and his late professor Dr. Morris J. Lawrence (no relation) for challenging and inspiring him as a student to continuously improve his skills as a guitarist. As a result, John has taught at Wayne Community College for 27 years and is currently the Director of Musical Performance. John tours the United States and has recorded with Atlantic Records recording
artists Straight Ahead. He also has a plethora of publications and videos on guitar instruction.
Kimmie Horne is a crowd pleaser and a regular at the Canton Summer Jazz Series. A native Detroiter, she is known as one of the premiere alto vocalists in the area. An exciting performer and entertainer, Kimmie features blends of classic jazz, pop and rhythm and blues. Having appeared with famous artists such as En Vogue and Aretha Franklin, her show takes the audience on an exciting adventure through original music, show tunes, and contemporary pop.
Randy Scott enjoys playing to the audience at the Canton Summer Jazz Series. Randy is a professional musician, record producer and composer. He recently signed a new record deal with a division of Sony, and performed as their new artist in Dubai last year. His 5th solo CD entitled, “90 Degrees At Midnight” remained in the top 20 on the national Billboard chart for 3 months. Randy has been awarded two Gold records, two Platinum records and one Multi-platinum record for his work on a Gospel Wow compilation CD and recordings with Grammy award winners, Kirk Franklin and Fred Hammond. He has a Bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree from Wayne State University. Randy contributes all of his accomplishments to his faith and belief in God.
Known for his new approach known as Soul Jazz, Lin Rountree will share his music for the first time at the Canton Summer Jazz Series. He attended Florida A& M University, where he developed a deep appreciation for jazz music and studied some of its masters. After traveling across the country, he planted roots in Detroit because of its richness in R&B, Soul and Jazz. He eventually formed the group “Up Close”, was signed to BDK records, and released several recordings. In 2011, he wrote and produced in a collaborative effort, “Soul-Tree, The Soul Jazz Experience”, representing a new direction in Instrumental Soul.
